Truth gets attacked from every side, whether it be about who Jesus is, what He did on the cross, the Bible, authority of scripture or even whether there is such a thing as certainty of truth itself.
You don’t have to look very far to find those who will act as instruments when it comes to attacking truth, infact, you don’t have to look at all, they will probably find you!
That is exactly what happened recently with a guy who was 100% convinced that there was no such thing as assurance of salvation since scripture tell us that we have to endure in order to be saved. If you don’t endure, you don’t receive salvation.
What I find interesting is that someone can come along and pluck out a few scriptures to ‘prove’ one doctrine yet ignore the rest of what scripture says in relation to a particular topic. So, for example, Jesus said that whoever believes in Him shall be saved, yet it seems Matt 24:13 adds a clause to that salvation.. infact, just believing is not enough, you have to endure too! Peter even adds yet another clause! He tell us we have to repent and be baptised too! Acts 2:38 So, it’s not just believe, we have to repent, believe, be baptised and endure to the end otherwise we won’t be saved! No pressure by the way π
Well, this is what I came across recently, because we have to repent, believe, be baptised and endure to the end otherwise we cannot have any assurance of salvation, so don’t get all cozy in your comfort zone thinking you have your ticket to heaven and don’t have to do anything, because you might just find Jesus turning you away and telling you He doesn’t know you… no, there is no assurance.. you have to WORK for your salvation!
(If you haven’t spotted it yet, there is a twist on truth that is going on here.)
One of the things that God has put into my very depths is how the enemy can use truth to bind people up. Jesus said His truth sets people free, but the enemy uses the truth to bind people up by adding his spin on it. Suddenly, the free gift of salvation is no longer a free gift, but something that is earned, and the Holy Spirit that is given to us is no longer our seal or guarantee of salvation, but someone who will leave if you mess up.
The only people who will tell you there is no such thing as assurance of salvation are those who have no assurance of salvation. If you try to tell someone who does have the assurance of salvation through their relationship with God that there is no such thing as assurance of salvation, well, its like telling me I am not typing on my laptop right now because it is still in the shop!
For those who try to tell us that the bible contradicts itself, all that means is, they have seen two scriptures that seem to say the opposite to one another and they haven’t bothered to study what they read in order to understand what the scriptures actually mean.
I know the Bible does not contradict itself, so I know if I come across one scripture that seems to say the opposite to another, I know they are both true, but I need to study them in order to understand what is being said. I need the Holy Spirit to give me understanding of scripture just as the disciples needed Jesus to help them understand His word. Trying to understand scripture without the Holy Spirit is like trying to make bread without yeast.. it just don’t work. But as well as understanding truth through the Word, we have the Holy Spirit who teaches us the truth as well as bears witness of the truth when we hear truth being spoken – truth has an echo – AMEN!
I know I am saved and have the assurance of salvation because the Holy Spirit gives me that assurance. The enemy would love to steal that truth away because He is a thief, and the unfortunate thing, he has succeeded with some, like the guy who tried to tell me there was no such assurance.
This is nothing new of course (It rarely is), Paul came under the same attacks by some Jewish leaders who tried to bring people back under the law that Christ fulfilled (Acts 15:1 you can’t be saved unless you are circumcised) so much so that Paul went to the leaders to ensure he was preaching the right gospel – The good news Paul was preaching was salvation by grace through faith, but the Jewish leaders wanted to remove grace and bring people back under the law, which was in effect denying the work of Christ on the cross, just as some try to do today by telling us we have to WORK and ENDURE.. or do something in order to make it into the Kingdom.
The truth is regarding salvation, there was nothing we could do and there is still nothing we can do. Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved. Acts 4:12. Doing good deeds ain’t gonna save you. Helping old ladies across the road ain’t gonna save you. Doing the flowers at church on a Sunday morning ain’t gonna save you…Jesus is the only way, it is only through Him that we can be saved, without the blood, there is no salvation… God had to become man in order to offer an acceptable sacrifice for the sins of the world, I’ve got a feeling there ain’t nothing we can do to add to what God already did.
It’s simple, we just have to believe.. the only way you cannot endure is by no longer believing. That is the work of God, to believe in the one He sent. John 6:29 – Work is putting your faith into action, not going to collect poor old Doris’s shopping because she can’t get around like she used to (although that is still a nice thing to do).
Work is putting faith into action; believing in Jesus as our saviour, redeemer, restorer and accepting Him as the one true living God.
How can we ever think we can add anything to what He already did? We can’t, we are saved and have the assurance of our salvation, not because of anything we did, can do or ever will do, but because whilst we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8
