There are some things in the Bible that we hear many times but never really give much thought to. When I read about God saying to Abraham that all nations would be blessed through him, it was one of those things that I had heard of, but never really knew what it meant or studied to find out.

The subject of Abraham’s seed came up recently on a forum and it was being used to justify universalism. The person was trying to say that since God said all nations would be blessed through Abraham, those who are not blessed whilst they live on the earth, must get their blessing when they die since it is not possible for God to lie.

Well, I knew that wasn’t biblical, so I went to find out what God meant when he said to Abraham that all nations would be blessed through him. This is always when I go to the Holy Spirit and ask Him to help me to understand the scriptures. Who better to teach you the scriptures than the Holy Spirit?

The quick background is that Abraham was married to Sarah and they couldn’t have kids. God came to Abraham and said He would have kids [with Sarah], he took him outside and showed him the stars in the sky and said if he could count the stars so would his offspring be…in other words, Abraham was going to have so many descendants that they couldn’t be counted.

God told Abraham that he would become a great and powerful nation, and all the nations on the earth would be blessed through [or in] him Genesis 18:18 – This was the passage of scripture that was interpret to say.. everyone who has lived and will live shall be blessed by God because of Abraham and if they don’t get the blessing when they are alive on the earth, they will get their blessing when they die.

So who was God referring to when he spoke of Abraham’s seed and the nations that would be blessed through him?

Thankfully, Paul explains this for us.

Paul says in Galatians 3:8 The Scripture foresaw that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, and announced the gospel in advance to Abraham: “All nations will be blessed through you.

The keyword here is ‘THROUGH‘. The scripture does not say because of you all nations will be blessed, or all nations will be blessed because of you. The scripture says all nations will be blessed THROUGH you. This means, through Abraham’s seed.

Paul tells us that it is those who belong to Christ are Abraham’s seed:

Ga 3:29 If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.

The promise Paul is referring to is the promise God made to Abraham of all the nations to be blessed through him.. through his seed.

I think a similar question may have come up before regarding Gods promise to bless everyone because Paul seems to address this:

Ro 9:6–8 It is not as though God’s word had failed. For not all who are descended from Israel are Israel. Nor because they are his descendants are they all Abraham’s children. On the contrary, “It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned.” In other words, it is not the natural children who are God’s children, but it is the children of the promise who are regarded as Abraham’s offspring.

Those who come to Christ by faith are the ones who are the ones who belong to Him and will inherit the promise, they are classed as Abraham’s seed and are the nations that will be blessed through Abraham.

That means US! 😀
