I have been participating in an interesting discussion over at a new Christian Social Networking website regarding Jehovah’s Witnesses. This discussion was prompted by me having a couple of JW’s knocking on my door.
I had no intention of posting about them here in this blog, but it did get me thinking how easily we could get drawn into their way of interpreting the scriptures if we are not clear ourselves on the things they try to teach.
Anyone who has been involved in an in-depth conversation with JW’s will know how easily you can get wrapped up into confusion when they spin their web of (mis-guided) knowledge around you – so being a Christian, it is good to at least equip yourself with truth for when they come knocking.
On the surface JW’s appear to have the same belief as a Christian, however, delving deeper into what they believe will reveal that they do not even believe who Jesus is which is the basis of everything! JW’s believe that Jesus was Gods first creation! They do not believe that Jesus is infact God!
When we look at Colossians 1:15-22 we read that it talks about who Jesus is. Jesus is the firstborn of all creation. Now it seems that JW’s have taken this scripture and interpreted it to mean Jesus was the first to be created by God. They have infact, taken this scripture so far out of context and totally not understood it that it means their beliefs are not based on truth!
And He is the image of the invisible God, the first-born of all creation. For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities — all things have been created by Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. He is also head of the body, the church; and He is the beginning, the first-born from the dead; so that He Himself might come to have first place in everything. For it was the Father’s good pleasure for all the fullness to dwell in Him, and through Him to reconcile all things to Himself, having made peace through the blood of His cross; through Him, I say, whether things on earth or things in heaven. Colossians 1:15-21
Even reading that whole passage we can see that Jesus was not created, because it already tells us that everything was created through him. So how can Jesus have been created through himself? He simply cannot be, therefore He was before creation.
Infact we already know that Jesus is God from John 1:1-3
In the beginning (before all time) was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word WAS GOD himself ( Isaiah 9:6 ) He was present originally with God. All things were made and came into existence through Him and without Him was not even one thing made that came into being.
I mean, does that not spell it out? Jesus is the Word, therefore, Jesus is God, there was no such thing as creation in the beginning and Jesus was there before anything was created.
The mis-understanding of how JW’s interpret this scripture which leads them to mis-lead others is based on how they have interpreted the verse that says that Jesus is the first-born of all creation. What they have done is try to limit God into their own understanding, it would seem that if something does not make sense to them, they will interpret what they read so it is within their own understanding.
When the Bible says that Jesus was the first-born, it meant that Jesus was above all creation. The Bible did not say that Jesus was the first-created!
First-born is generally not a term that we would use unless we were infact talking about our first-born child. However, when we look at the meaning of first-born in the Greek (prototokos – priority) as well as how the term was used during those times, we would see that the term first-born was not to do with birth, but was everything to do with rank or priority.
Jesus is above all – above all creation. This is what it means when we read that Jesus is the first-born over all creation.
The reason why it is impossible for JW’s to understand scripture is because they try to read it with their own understanding. This is not possible. We need the Holy Spirit to interpret the true meaning of scripture – 2 Corinthians 3:6
They will never understand the true meaning of scripture for as long as they continue to deny who Jesus is. This is because they also deny who the Holy Spirit is. The Holy Spirit is God! This is the Trinity – probably one of the most difficult things to try to understand with our human minds, but because we do not fully understand it, does that mean it cannot be true? Does not the Bible make is clear to us that God is the Father, God is the Son and God is the Holy Spirit? Three in one.
Since they deny even that the Holy Spirit is alive, there is no possible way that they can understand the Bible, therefore instead, they try to interpret it into something that their minds can understand even though they interpret in a way that is not truth.
If the Holy Spirit is not alive as JW’s try to teach then…
- Why is He called God? Acts 5:3-5
- How is it that He can teach? John 14:26
- How can He be blasphemed? Matthew 12:31
- How can He be the one who comforts? Acts 9:31
- How is it possible for Him to speak? Acts 28:25
- How then can He be resisted Acts 7:51
- How can He be grieved Eph. 4:30
- How can He help us in our weaknesses Rom. 8:26
How can a “religion” claim that their beliefs are based on the Bible yet even deny the first chapter of the first book of Genesis Gen. 1:26, “Then God said, ‘Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness.
No, the “our” does not refer to the angels as the JW’s may like to say, because the Bible tells us in Isaiah 44:24 that God made the earth Himself! The “our” refers to the Godhead; Father, Son and Holy Spirit, we even read in Genesis 1:2 that the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
I cannot but help refer to John 5:37-40 to end this post :
And the Father who sent me has himself testified concerning me. You have never heard his voice of seen his form, nor does his word dwell in you, for you do not believe the one he sent. You diligently study the scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life.
