It’s interesting that when Paul spoke about the armour of God, the first thing mentioned is the belt of Truth.

When we look back at Eve when she was tempted in the Garden of Eden, the temptation was based on ‘did God actually say?’ Gen 3:1 Immediately, there was a question on truth. Did God really say this, is this what he meant, how can you be sure? The seed of doubt was planted.

God clearly said ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die‘. Gen 3:3 Eve knew it well enough that she quoted it! So how could she be bought to a place where she decided the serpant was right and God could not have really meant what he said?  Ge 3:4 But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die.

This same technique of the devil is being used to decieve people all over the world regarding “did God actually say?”. This question has bought so much division amongst believers, because there is always the question, ‘did God actually say’. So the conclusion is to accept we can never be fully sure what God meant, so the search for absolute truth ceases.

The question put to Eve is, are you sure you understood what God meant when he said ‘you shall surely die’? And then the challenge on that was, ‘God didn’t mean what you think he meant’. Eve was completely decieved by the devil. She knew exactly what God had said, she has just quoted Him, but with the seed of doubt, she questioned her own interpretation of what God meant. Just by this questioning, although God said not to eat the fruit, she ate it!

This question on truth is more evident today than ever! Some believers are so caught up with it, that they never claim any authority on truth nor believe there is such a thing  as authority of truth. The reason for this is because they have no faith in what God really said, or do not trust themselves or anyone else to know what God really meant.

We know exactly what God said regarding truth through scripture, but because so many are caught up with ‘did God really say’ we lose sight of the truth and doubt whether we can ever really know what truth is. If we reside ourselves to believing that we can never really know what truth is, then this in itself takes away any authority of truth.

The devil is the first false teacher the world knew. First he placed doubt on truth, and then he lied. The lie was not recognised because doubt was placed first, and instead, deception came and succeeded because of the question of what is truth? Eve lost sight of the truth, she doubted what she knew was truth, so her foundation of truth was shattered, leaving her vulnerable to a lie; and in this case, a lie that succeeded.

There is no wonder that the very first thing Paul spoke about when talking about spiritual warfare was to stand therefore with the belt of Truth. Because if we have no assurance of truth, then we are decieved. How can we do battle if we do not know what is truth? How can we stand firm in the truth if we do not know what the truth is? We become weak and vulnerble.

I wonder if Pilate knew the vastness of his words when he asked Jesus ‘what is truth?’ John 18:38 We sometimes look at this and think, well, Jesus was stood right infront of you, you fool, Jesus is the truth! Jesus surely is the truth, but Pilate did not know this. Pilate might as well have said to Jesus, ‘I don’t believe you are who you claim to be’. Infact his question implies that he wasn’t really too sure about anything.

Pilate had God stood right infront of him, yet he had no idea who He was. Pilate had the great I AM, the Alpha and the Omega, the creator of the universe standing a few feet from him, but he was clueless. He surely did have the Truth of everything that ever was, is, and is to come right there in his presense, but he was a lost soul and was blind to ‘what is truth’.

This question has bogged down so many people because of the seed of doubt that the enemy has placed in the minds of so many believers, but why would the enemy want to decieve believers? The ultimate answer to that question is because if those who believe in Jesus are bought to a place that they accept they can never really know what the truth is, how can they go and be effective in the world telling others about the truth? How can they preach the good news, if they are not sure what the good new is? How can they speak with authority if they do not believe there is any authority of truth?

The lie of the devil is like a noose around the neck. Instead of being in the truth that sets us free, we end up with a lie that binds us up.

We need to start trusting God to reveal his truth to us and to set us free in His truth if we have fallen into deception because of a seed of doubt. We need to go back to basics in the sense of trusting God to speak those truths to us through his word. We need to stop doubting God’s ability to impart his truth to us. God is infallible and so is His truth. God is not a man that he would lie. Num 23:19

Read these scriptures, dwell on them, ask the Lord to speak to you through them and I pray as you do that you will recieve a revelation of the truth of Gods word which will enable you to grow in faith regarding His truth and how that empowers you against the tactics of the enemy, so instead of being like the walking wounded, you will be a mighty warrior, standing firm in the truth and being used by God to set other people free from the chains of the enemy through the freedom that comes from Gods truth.

Jn 4:23–24 But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. 24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”

Jn 14:16–17 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, 17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.

Jn 16:13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.

Jn 8:32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.

1 Jn 2:21 I write to you, not because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and because no lie is of the truth.
